The Process Following An Arrest
After an individual has been arrested in the state of California, they will be transported to a local law enforcement station to be booked and processed. The time it takes to process an offender will depend on upon the size of the station, or jail, and just how busy they are. In some cases, the process can be completed within an hour, however, it can also take up to and surpass twelve hours.
While being processed, the arrested individual will be searched for drugs, weapons, and other contraband. All personal property will be documented and held by the jailer. The defendant will at no time, have access to any of their personal property which includes cell phones, credit cards, or money.
Included in the booking process is fingerprinting, background check, outstanding warrant check, and being processed into the local computer system. The arrested individual will also be cross referenced in the nationwide criminal computer system, and also have to be updated within that system.
Once the processing and booking has been completed, the defendant will be escorted to a jail cell. While some jails will have a payphone for an inmate to use, others will be given access to a phone, at the jailer’s convenience. An incarcerated person is not allowed to receive phone calls, nor any messages. If you are the person they call for help, it is imperative that you obtain certain information that you can give to the bail bonds agency, to enable them to assist the defendant. Vital information includes, what jail they are being held in, what the charges are, and where they were arrested. It may also be a good idea to find out if they need anyone else contacted, such as which bail bonds company they want to use, if an employer needs to be advised, or if they have pets that may need to be taken care of.
Bail can be organized during the booking process, if the defendant qualifies. A bail bond can not be organized however, until the computer processing has been completed. At this time, the defendant can look at their release options. If they have requested the assistance of a bail bonds agency, ensure you have the above relevant information to hand at the time you call them.
